Introductory crate training progress, as of 6.24.24: socks is doing very well with his crate training. he's able to settle down in his crate with minimal to no whining. For the past 2 days, he has settled in his crate right away without any fuss. He wakes up 2.5 to 3 hours later to potty and goes back in the crate to sleep for another 3 hours. He has not had a single accident in his crate since he started crate training at 6 weeks old.

Crate training should continue at new home to ensure he becomes completely comfortable with the crate. training has to be consistent. if you allow him to sleep outside of the crate enough, he may fuss when you do put him in the crate. at night, only take him out to potty and immediately place him back in the crate when done. don't let him play at night. take him out right away if he whines to go potty to avoid accidents . if you have a bed or blanket in his crate, ensure the room is cool. If he can't seem to settle in his crate, it may be too warm for him. some pups prefer to sleep on the cool tray. give last water an hour before bed and ensure he potties before crating. he will usually pee twice, about 20-30+ minutes apart. when crated at night, expect him to wake up within 2 to 3 hours, possible longer, to potty. be consistent with his crate training and once he's fully trained and house broken, then you can allow him to sleep freely in your home, if you wish. he's currently using an 18" crate but will need to transition to a 24" crate at new home. if using a larger crate, use a divider to ensure he has just enough space to stand up, do a full 360 turn. this will discourage him from going potty in the crate if he really needs to go.

personality: from what we've observed over the weeks, socks is friendly, social, affectionate, and curious. he is playful and loves attention. He's a goofball who's a little sassy. he is a very sweet boy that just wants to please.

interpretation of test results:

socks would be good for the average home, whether a first time or second time dog owner. He can be a high-energy dog and may need lots of exercise. He would generally be good with people, other animals, and children. He will need to have structure and follow a consistent schedule at his new home. He will need training but he will do very well at it and learn quickly. Socialization and desensitization training should continue at new home. He's sensitive to touch under his paws so it's important to continue with weekly nail trimmings and grooming with positive reinforcement (high value treats). The more he's exposed to these grooming practices, the more he will become desensitized. also ensure to use high value treats when socializing in public areas, meeting new people, or with any unfamiliar experience, whether it be a loud noise, new place, object, etc. Remember to positively reinforce the good behavior, not the unwanted behavior. take extra care during "fear periods". socks was excited and friendly during the test. He seemed confident and was eager to please. He even retrieved the crumpled paper back to the tester. focus on consistent training, socializaiton, desesnitization, and good recall and you will have a well-rounded dog someday.
