Week 8 | Day 50 - 56

  • Puppies are eating whole kibble as is (no soaking in water needed). They are eating 3 to 4 times a day depending on appetite. Feeding times are around 6-7AM, 12-1PM, 6-7PM

  • Current food is Purina Pro Plan Puppy Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula

  • Puppies are sleeping in the crate for every nap time and at night. At night, they are able to sleep 2-3 hours at a time. Potty break is needed right when they wake in the crate.

  • Typical routine (while with us):

      • Nap/Sleep in crate

      • Wake up, potty, water and/or food

      • Potty then play with access to water. Play time with siblings happens after every nap (no play time after 10PM and before 6AM) and lasts around 30 mins to 1 hour.

      • When pups start getting tired and begin to fall asleep, we lure them in their crates, if able to, or we pick them up and place them in crates.

      • If pups fuss in the crate (barking, whining, shuffling, etc.) and we did not see them go potty right before going in the crate, we take them out to potty. Usually pups will pee right away. Allow time to poo. As soon as pups try to lie down or play, we place them back in crates. When you place a puppy in the crate, the pup may settle for a short period of time, which is a matter of minutes, then start fussing. We call this the "short settle". We take out the pup again to do a potty check then place back in the crate. Pups can double pee and/or double poo. Always expect the pup to have to be taken out of the crate once or twice more before settling down for 1-3 hours, which we call the "long settle". We allow pups to have access to water for every potty break as we want to train their bladders to hold more fluids. At night, we only let pups out to potty, never to play. We settle pups down for the night around 10PM. If puppies have pottied but are still unable to settle and continue to bark, they may be hungry. At this age, we feed when they're hungry. Puppies will typically settle down in the crate when they're content. We also try not to allow pups to nap outside of the crate during their crate training as this may set them back. When we know pups should be content but continue to bark or whine, we allow them time to setttle. It's OK to let them cry it out but pay attention to their body language.

      • Once they settle down in their crates at night, they will generally sleep 2-3 hours at a time. Pups will usually sleep longer without their littermates.

Week 8 | Day 50 - 56

  • Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test

    • The test was performed on each puppy in a room they never been before with somone who they were not familiar with, also known as the tester. There was also another person in the room, the scorer, and this person stood in the corner of the room where the puppy would not notice. The scorer did not interact with the puppy but only observed and scored the puppy on each test based on its reaction.

    • The test covers the following dispostions:

      1. Social Atttraction - The degree of social attraction puppy has to people

        • Puppy was placed in a test area in the center of the room about 4 feet from the tester. The tester, while kneeling down, coaxed the puppy to approach by gently clapping hands and calling.

      2. Following - Their willingness to follow a person.

        • The tester stood up and slowly walked away while encouraging puppy to follow.

      3. Restraint - The degree of dominant or submissive tendency and ease of handling in difficult situations

        • The tester crouched down, gently rolled puppy on its back, put a hand over the chest and gently held it there for 30 seconds.

      4. Social Dominance - The degree of acceptance of social dominance by a person

        • The tester let the puppy stand or sit then gently stroked puppy from head to the back.

      5. Elevation - The degree of accepting dominance while in a position of no control such as at a vet or groomers

        • The tester cradeled the puppy with hands under chest and gently lifted up 2 feet in the air and held position for 30 seconds

      6. Retrieving - Their willingess to do something for you

        • The tester crouced beside puppy and attracted puppy's attention using a crumbed up piece of papper. When the puppy showed interest to the paper, the tester tossed the paper no more than 4 feet in front of the puppy encouraged it to retrieve the paper

      7. Touch - Their sensitivity to touch

        • The tester located the webbing of one of the puppy's front paws and pressed lightly between the index finger and thumb, and gradually increased pressure while counting to 10. The tested stopped as soon as puppy pulled away or showed signs of discomfort.

      8. Sound - Their sensitity to loud noises or thunderstorms

        • Puppy was placed in the center of the room and the tester made a sharp noise by hitting a pot with a metal spoon.

      9. Sight - The degree of a response to a moving object such as chasing squirrels, children, or bicycles

        • The puppy was placed in the center of the room and the tester jerked a rag repeatedly jerked the rag across the floor.

      10. Stability - The degree of startle response to strange objects

        • Tester opened up an umbrella about 5 feet from puppy.

    • Each test is scored separately and interpreted on its own merits. The scores are not averaged and there are no winners or losers.

    • The purpose of this test is to help you choose the puppy that may fit your lifestyle the best

  • Puppies are eating whole kibble as is (no soaking in water needed). They are eating 3 to 4 times a day depending on appetite. Feeding times are around 6-7AM, 12-1PM, 6-7PM
