Introductory crate training progress: currently sleeping in an 18" crate. able to settle down in the crate, sometimes with some initial whining. likes sleeping with the ac on. used to sleeping on the cool tray without bedding. used to sleeping with noise in the background during the day (white noise, tv, music, or desensitization videos on youtube). nighttime crating starts around 10-11PM. first potty break usually happens after an hour or so of sleep. after that, pup is able to sleep longer, currently, up to 3 hours at a time. This timeframe will increase as pup gets older. pup gets water during potty breaks. this may be different at new homes but keep in mind that pup may not settle in the crate if thirsty. we do not allow pups to play at night. we want pup to associate nighttime with sleep time. we only take pup out to potty, drink water, then immediately back in the crate. crating is easiest with a tired puppy. ensure pup has had plenty of exercise beforehand. our pups get lots of outside playtime and stimulation before going to sleep at night. if the pup is allowed to nap outside of the crate during the day, you may find it gets harder to crate the pup at night. since they're still learning to love the crate, we crate our pups for all naps and at night.
personality: gimli is the smallest of the bunch but don't be fooled by his size, he keeps up with the big pups during play. he is a sweet and friendly boy who may need a little time warming up to new situations. he is a happy boy who loves affection and cuddles.
Note: The volhard puppy aptitude test is simply a snapshot of what a puppy is like now but may have little bearing on what the pup will be as an adult. this temperament test is only a point in time, and factors like sleepiness or simply an off-day can impact testing. proper socialization, desensitization, and training in the first few months of a puppy's life are crucial components in shaping a dog's adult life.
volhard puppy aptitude test results & recommendation: mostly 4s.
gimli would be good for the average home, whether a first time or second time dog owner with an active lifestyle. He can be a high-energy dog and may need lots of exercise. He would generally be good with people, other animals, children, and seniors. He will need to have structure and follow a consistent schedule at his new home. He will need training but he will do very well at it and learn quickly. Socialization and desensitization training should continue at new home especially during the first year of his life but most especially during the first 12 weeks. during the test, gimli was a litter nervous but adjusted well after a few minutes. He seemed happy and eager to please once he was more comfortable.
